Sonora based artist Phil vance creates incredible typographic portraits rendered entirely in handwritten text. Attracted by pattern, texture and color, the artist describes his process as “cross hatching but with words”. From Einstein to Mark Twain, every portrait of the In their own wordThe series pays homage to Vance’s favorite historical and artistic figures.

To form the outlines, shadows, and detail of each word portrait, Vance writes inspirational quotes from each subject thousands of times in different sizes and layers. Vance told My Modern Met in an email, “I started to imagine portraits where you could look through subjects’ skin to see inside and read their thoughts.” He continues: “I got really crazy with the portraits of de Kooning, Picasso and Escher. These are a few of my favorite artists, so I wanted to pay tribute to them in my own way while exposing others to some of their wisdom.

Sensing that using a black pen can seem boring at times, Vance has recently started exploring the possibilities of using color. For one of his more recent portraits — of Batman’s Joker — Vance has spent over 100 hours painting quotes from The black Knight. Similar to a pointillism painting, the handwritten typography blends from afar to create the image. Up close, the viewer can notice countless words and phrases of different shades. Vance reveals, “I like to think of color portraits as a kind of mashup between the rendering of my words and the optical blend of Chuck Close.

Check out more of Vance’s work on his website, where its growing portfolio includes cities and abstract landscapes, illustrations and digital art.
