The gross vandalism was described as ‘disgusting’ and upset residents
Mindless vandals left ‘crude designs’ on murals which had been painted to brighten up Plympton’s Underground. Ellie Johnson, also known as Mrs. Murals, has been praised by local residents for her artwork.
Ellie had transformed four out of six subways so far as part of the Chaddlewood Art and Nature Subway project, helping to transform parts of Plympton into a cleaner, more attractive area. The talented local artist has so far decorated four subways across Plymouth with beautiful bumblebees, wildflowers and butterflies.
But murals of bees and butterflies have been defaced with crude designs, leaving residents “gutted”. Ellie told PlymouthLive it was a shame her work was vandalized.

She said: “I’ve had an overwhelmingly positive response from the public to these murals, with people going out of their way to say in person how much they love them and how much the artwork means to them. I have received private messages of personal stories of how they/their families are connected regarding the subject of the artwork (bees/butterflies and lost loved ones).
‘Local school children love the underpasses now – asking parents to walk in that direction rather than driving, so it’s a shame that children then see crude images or hateful/racist graffiti.’
Ms Murals’ work began in October last year when community funding enabled Ellie to brighten up the Plympton neighborhood and continues to bring smiles to people’s faces as they walk down the tube. But this week, a “roughly drawn phallus” was added to the butterfly subway,
One person expressed disappointment that people “couldn’t have anything good” because of vandalism on both the Bee tube in Chaddlewood and the Butterfly tube near Edwards Drive. The gross vandalism was called “disgusting” and upset residents.
A Plympton resident shared on Facebook: “Greeted to see that another of Mrs Murals’ fantastic Tubes has been vandalized. I can only assume it was the same culprit who was responsible for the Bee Tube vandalism as there is now a crudely drawn phallic design in the butterfly subway at Edwards drive.” They added: “Absolutely disgusting behavior.”
Another local resident responded to the post and called it “pathetic” that people feel the need to vandalize the murals and young children will see the crude designs. Another person said they knew it wouldn’t be long before something happened.
They said, “I knew it wouldn’t be long before somebody vandalized them. I can’t have anything nice.”
